Prospective Online Students

How Does Online Classes Work?

UMT-Connected offers a wide selection of online courses (hybrid, online and technology-enhanced) from a variety of disciplines delivered entirely online. Both online learning as well as and its traditional counterpart have pros and cons, so it's vital to understand what to expect before logging into the online classroom.

1. Availability and Credibility of an Online Course

A critical factor in online courses is the amount of time you have, every day to dedicate to your online course(s). Are you willing and able to attend university full-time or do you need more flexibility to work around your busy schedule? The university conducts your online session according to a published plan, but there are usually no "live" classes to attend. Instead, learning activities, assignments, assessments and discussions all take place at your convenience. You are going to choose the place - at home, at school or work- according to your ease of having access to a computer connected to the Internet. Online courses demand the same academic workload as on-campus courses” and are equivalent regarding curriculum and credit weight, however, without common hurdles that prevent many of us from pursuing other goals.

2. Course Content of an Online Course

The overall approach to the teaching and learning processes amongst various online courses may be varied, but they often have similar characteristics. As an online student at UMT, you will use our learning management system, Moodle, to access all of your online classes. We employ standard classroom textbooks and printed materials in combination with online lectures, virtual learning activities, assignments, and supplementary course materials. Some courses may include video presentations that are similar in length and content to lectures given in an on-campus environment. Online lectures are entirely text-based or consist of some combination of text, images, audio, and video.  Other courses break the content into smaller modules or abandon the lecture entirely, instead relying on discussion forums and different types of learning activities such as simulations, gaming or scenario-based learning exercises.

3. Communication in an Online Course

Another aspect to consider is the level of social interaction you are hoping to achieve during your academic journey. Do you need interaction from your peers and instructors to succeed and stay motivated? Alternatively, do you thrive in an independent study environment? Social interaction with instructors and other students, while not as common in online courses, still happens regularly. The most significant difference is in the form it takes, with many online student interactions happening via video chats, online discussions forums, blogs, journals, wikis, and emails.

4. Assignment Submission in an Online Course

The course is designed by our experts so that you receive course assignments, complete them according to your own flexible time (but within the scheduled due date), and then submit those assignments as electronic documents. Your instructor will evaluate those assignments and will provide valuable feedback for them. A threaded discussion forum will be an essential part of many courses, and you can make the best use of this forum for sharing information and collaborating with other members.

5. Final/Mid-Term Exams and Weekly Quizzes in an Online Course

Depending on the online course and respective instructor, you will most probably take your tests or exams online. However, a few courses may require that you come to a testing room on campus. Additionally, some programs may require pre-arranged visits to the university campus, and you should plan for them before enrolling yourselves for such programs. Schedule of classes will inform you about the course requirements.

6. Time-Commitment for Online Courses

If this is your first chance to have an online class, you are going to have a great experience. However, to be successful, you must keep a few things in mind. Tips for success will help you stay abreast.
