Prospective Online Students

Challenges of Virtual  Education Faced by Learners

Today online instruction is considered to be an integral part of education and learning across the world but; still, potential students face issues of online learning and raise substantial questions. Such problems do not outbalance the benefits of virtual education; they are just simple reasons to say that the students considering online learning instead of working on campus should rightfully be aware of the associated challenges therein.

Online Learning Needs Technological Reliance

Online learning endeavors are reliant upon the availability of technology and electricity. In distance learning, the learner has to work within the confines of network adapters, power, computers, servers, software, web browsers, routers, modems, and many more. If anyone of these facets fails, the connection becomes compromised for an indefinite time to come. Many students cannot access the high bandwidth or the reliable internet connection that online courses require, and thus they are, not only, counted as absent but also fail to catch up with the lessons.

Online Learning Does Not Oblige to Learners’ Identity

Learners may feel isolated and disconnected from online courses that may influence learning. Learner's sense of identity is influenced by affiliation with the community of learning. Keeping in view the association with knowledge community with the spirit of integrity, valued members play a critical role in an efficient knowledge building process.

Virtual Classroom Demands Engagement

It is asserted by the researchers that the most frequent challenge faced by the students in online degree programs is not having face-to-face engagement with professors and other students. Professors provide course instruction in a variety of ways, such as by sharing slideshow presentations, posting videos of recorded lectures, or even streaming lectures live. However, despite the range of ways instructors can foster student engagement, some students do not find a virtual classroom as engaging as a traditional one. The lack of in-person communication can become problematic for students, who are struggling to understand the course material.

Online Education Demands Proper Time Management

Time management is a difficult task for learners, as online courses require much time and intensive work. Moreover, the adults who prefer web-based learning programs for their place and time flexibility, they rarely find the time to take the courses due to their various everyday commitments. A regular schedule planner would be a significant help to these learners, as they could even set reminders for their classes and assignments.

Online Learning Requires Self-Discipline

The success of the learner in an online classroom is highly dependent on the self-discipline. Online courses offer a higher level of independence than the traditional courses thus becoming a self-directed learner proves to be the biggest challenge for the learners. At the start of an online course, there is much information to review including the syllabus, course materials, school policies, and procedures. A learner must possess the quality of self-discipline to organize and evaluate the required necessary information.

Online Education Calls For Self-Motivation

Self-motivation is an essential requirement in distance learning; however, many online learners lack this essential constituent.
Many learners may feel themselves behind from other students because of facing difficulties in handling technological medium. The students have to find the motivation to follow the new educational trends and also correctly fit themselves according to expected challenges in the educational and professional fields. Only a positive attitude of learning will help them overcome the obstacles faced in eLearning; though this is hard to practice, students need to understand that it is necessary to reap the eLearning’s benefits in the future.

Online Learning Offers Conflicts in Learning Styles

Every learner carries a distinct style of learning. Some students find it difficult to follow their own, personal learning style in an online class environment. Most people have acquired a majority of their education in a physical class. Consequently, the set of skills and learning styles are likely to be developed according to natural learning. The very reason is responsible for taking the time to get used to online learning while others may acclimate quite naturally and quickly. The method of learning all depends on an individual’s learning style.

Online Learning Lacks in Feedback

An online classroom does not offer direct and instant feedback. However, thorough and detailed feedback is usually provided by the online course instructor in some time.

Online Learning Proposes Campus Distractions

In distance learning, home takes the shape of the campus for the learner. Learning while sitting in your living room is no doubt amazing and advantage filled experience, but sometimes homework area taken as the online classroom cannot be as conducive to study as an actual, physical classroom. Distractions in the home area, such as guests or siblings playing around, can be an enormous challenge to those learning online.

Online Education Diminishes Social Aspect

Online learning grants the loss of many social aspects while taking an online route. Within the layouts of most degree programs, there are indeed many opportunities given in social interaction with peers. Physical classroom creates more considerable bonds, a camaraderie founded on collective work and goals, and many other supportive attributes for the students.
